Finding great kids denim jeans in New Zealand is harder than it should be.
As a mum of an active boy, I spent years buying jeans that looked great in the shop but fell apart after a few washes, sat stiff and uncomfortable on little legs, or simply couldn't keep up with the way kids actually move.
So when I started ARDY Kids, denim was one of the first things I tackled.
Here's what I learned — and what to look for when buying kids denim in NZ.
1. Fabric Matters More Than Anything
The biggest problem with cheap kids denim is the fabric. Synthetic blends feel stiff, don't breathe, and wear out quickly. Look for 100% cotton denim — it's softer, more breathable and gets better with every wash.

2. The Waistband Makes or Breaks the Fit
Kids come in all shapes and sizes — and most denim jeans are designed for one standard fit. An adjustable elastic waistband is a game changer, especially for petite or slim kids who struggle to find jeans that stay up.

3. Deep Pockets — Yes, Really
Kids love pockets. Deep, functional pockets that can actually hold things — a rock, a toy, a snack — make a huge difference to how much your child will actually want to wear a pair of jeans.

4. Easy Care is Non-Negotiable
Parents don't have time for hand-wash only, dry clean, or complicated care instructions. Kids denim should be machine washable and able to handle regular washing without losing its shape or colour.
ARDY denim is machine washable — just wash dark colours inside out and line dry for best results. One note: indigo denim may show slight colour transfer in the first few washes. This is completely normal and stops after a couple of washes.
5. A Fit That Moves
Kids don't sit still. Their clothing needs to move with them — through playground climbs, bike rides, dance moves and everything in between. A relaxed fit with a bit of room to move makes all the difference.
